About Boom Cellar
BoomCellar is the analytics website for investors in wine stocks — the small, scattered, and quietly fascinating universe of publicly listed vineyards, Champagne houses, and wine producers. Wine as an asset class usually means bottles, funds, or Liv-ex indices of fine-wine prices. BoomCellar covers the other route: owning the producers themselves, through ordinary listed equities on 16 countries' exchanges.
The site first launched in 2015 with a composite index and a screener of ~30 listed vineyards. This 2026 rebuild refreshes the universe (a surprising share of the 2015 list has since been acquired, delisted, or wound down), recomputes the index, and modernises the stack — while keeping the original idea intact: one number for the listed wine industry.
BIPTVI — index definition
BIPTVI (Boom Cellar Index of Publicly Traded Vineyards) is a market-capitalisation-weighted composite of 25 listed wine producers.
- Universe: companies whose primary business is growing, producing, or selling wine, with a live public listing. Diversified drinks giants (LVMH, Pernod Ricard, Constellation) are excluded — they are drinks conglomerates, not vineyards.
- Calculation: for each constituent, last price × approximate shares outstanding, converted to EUR at current rates; the index is the sum of these market caps divided by the base-date sum, × 100.
- Base: 2026-07-03 = 100 (v2). The original v1 index was based 2015-08-10 = 100 with a EUR divisor of 6,531,967,292; the v1 and v2 series are not directly comparable because the universe changed materially.
- Caveats: share counts are maintained manually and approximate; historical index values use current FX rates (not historical); prices are delayed. This is an editorial research index, not an investable benchmark.
What happened to the 2015 universe
A decade in listed wine is brutal — consolidation and take-privates thinned the list considerably. Gone since the original launch:
- Majestic Wine (MJW.L → became Naked Wines)
- Baron de Ley (BDL.MC — squeezed out 2021)
- CVNE (CUN.MC — delisting tender 2021)
- Pol Roger (MLPOL.PA — left Euronext)
- Henri Maire (MAIR.PA — acquired)
- Truett-Hurst (THST — wound down)
- Scheid Vineyards (SVIN — went dark)
- J. Boutaris & Son (MPK.AT — suspended)
- China Tontine Wines (0389.HK — delisted)
- New Silkroad (0472.HK — pivoted away from wine)
- The Duckhorn Portfolio (NAPA — IPO'd 2021, taken private 2024)
- Vintage Wine Estates (VWE — IPO'd 2021, filed Chapter 11 2024)
- Gusbourne (GUS.L — delisted from AIM 2025)
Meanwhile a new generation listed: Italian Wine Brands and Masi Agricola in Milan, Purcari in Bucharest, Chapel Down in London, and Sula Vineyards in Mumbai — all now in the index.
